Memorial Service For Officer Julius Nielsen Killed Sept 18, 1921

McLean County Sheriff’s Office The Kenmare Police Department is hosting a memorial service for Kenmare Police Officer Julius Nielsen in honor of the 100th anniversary of his line of duty death. Sergeant Curt Olson of the McLean County Sheriff’s Office (and former Kenmare Police Officer) is facilitating the event.

Officer Nielsen was shot and killed on September 18, 1921 while attempting to arrest a robbery suspect in the rear of the Park Hotel which was located on Division Street of the downtown square.

Officer Nielsen’s killing is the fifth of five law enforcement line of duty deaths,and the most recent killing of a Peace Officer, in Ward County.

All of which occurred between 1918 and 1921.

The service will take place on September 18, 2021 at 4 PM at the Kenmare City Park near the Danish Mill in downtown Kenmare.Immediately following the service, a procession will go to Trinity Lutheran Cemetery where Officer Nielsen is buried, northeast of Kenmare. Refreshments will be served at Trinity Lutheran Church at the end of the service.This event is free and open to the public.
