Words To Learn, For Today

Summer is “kayitz” (קַיִץ), which is an ancient, Biblical word for “fruit.” In summer, the orchards in Israel are bursting with fruit, just waiting to be picked!
Spring is “aviv” (אָבִיב), which also has Biblical roots. It means “growth,” just like the almond blossoms that surround you in springtime.
Fall is “stav” (סְתָו), which used to be a synonym for winter. As Israel doesn’t have a true autumn where the leaves change color, this makes a lot of sense.
Winter is “choref” (חֹרֶף), and guess what? It’s also from the Bible! It means “time when fruits are taken in.”
